NP-hard graph problems and boundary classes of graphs

چکیده
Any graph problem, which is NP-hard in general graphs, becomes polynomial-time solvable when restricted to graphs in special classes. When does a difficult problem become easy? To answer this question we study the notion of boundary classes. In the present paper we define this notion in its most general form, describe several approaches to identify boundary classes and apply them to various graph problems. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Tenacity and some other Parameters of Interval Graphs can be computed in polynomial time
In general, computation of graph vulnerability parameters is NP-complete. In past, some algorithms were introduced to prove that computation of toughness, scattering number, integrity and weighted integrity parameters of interval graphs are polynomial. In this paper, two different vulnerability parameters of graphs, tenacity and rupture degree are defined. In general, computing the tenacity o...
متن کاملA Boundary Property for Upper Domination
An upper dominating set in a graph is a minimal (with respect to set inclusion) dominating set of maximum cardinality. The problem of finding an upper dominating set is generally NP-hard, but can be solved in polynomial time in some restricted graph classes, such as P4-free graphs or 2K2-free graphs. For classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, the boundary separating diffi...
متن کاملExploiting structure to cope with NP-hard graph problems : polynomial and exponential time exact algorithms
An ideal algorithm for solving a particular problem always finds an optimal solution, finds such a solution for every possible instance, and finds it in polynomial time. When dealing with NP-hard problems, algorithms can only be expected to possess at most two out of these three desirable properties. All algorithms presented in this thesis are exact algorithms, which means that they always find...
متن کاملIn Search of the Tractability Boundary of Planning Problems
Recently, considerable focus has been given to the problem of determining the boundary between tractable and intractable planning problems. To this end, we present complexity results for two classes of planning problems from the literature. First, we show that approximating a solution to a planning problem in the class 3S to within polynomial factors is NPhard. We also show that plan existence ...
متن کاملMore results on weighted independent domination
Weighted independent domination is an NP-hard graph problem, which remains computationally intractable in many restricted graph classes. In particular, the problem is NP-hard in the classes of sat-graphs and chordal graphs. We strengthen these results by showing that the problem is NP-hard in a proper subclass of the intersection of sat-graphs and chordal graphs. On the other hand, we identify ...
